About 12,000 species of ferns exist and are widely distributed across the world, in particular subtropical and tropical regions. China is historically regarded as a kingdom of ferns due to about 2,600 species of ferns from 223 genera and 61 families live in China. Jiufushan Nature Reserve is also abundant in fern resources, 112 species of 34 families, including cibotium barometz & #40;jinmaogou in pinyin, means a gold-hair dog& #41; and alsophila denticulate, two class II protected plant species designated by the national government. Thanks to its origin from the Jurassic, cibotium barometz is the oldest“living fossil” in forests, but it is now a national-level endangered rare species. Golden fuzz grows all over the stems and petioles and makes them look like the head of a gold-hair dog, which leads to its name in Chinese.
